The New York Yankees have a pretty good lineup as it is, especially after getting Giancarlo Stanton back into the mix. However, there is no question they can use an upgrade in the infield.
More specifically, the Yankees will certainly be on the hunt for someone to man second or third base between now and the MLB trade deadline, which would move DJ Lemahieu to the bench and allow Jazz Chisholm to play either position.
While the market is relatively thin in terms of big bats at those two positions, Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly has identified a potential trade target for New York: Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez.
“To that end, the Yankees—and just about every other contending team in baseball—will be hoping the Arizona Diamondbacks decide to become sellers,” Kelly wrote. “Can you imagine how much of an upgrade having Eugenio Suarez in this lineup would be over late-career DJ LeMahieu or Oswald Peraza?
Suarez is slashing .251/.321/.569 with 25 home runs and a league-leading 67 RBI thus far in 2025. Last year, he slugged 30 homers while posting a .788 OPS. He bashed a career-high 49 dingers with the Cincinnati Reds back in 2019 and has already registered 30-plus home runs five times and is well on his way to doing it on a sixth occasion this season.
While Suarez’s defense definitely isn’t top notch, he would bring quite a bit more pop to the Yankees’ lineup. Just imagine a middle of the order that features Aaron Judge, Stanton, Suarez with names like Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt and Chisholm surrounding them?
Now, Suarez’s rather subpar glove could actually scare New York away, particularly when you take into account how bad defense sabotaged the Yanks last year. But his offense may just be too tantalizing for the Yankees to bypass.
The catch, though, is that Suarez is slated to hit free agency after the season, so New York probably wouldn’t be willing to surrender a significant return for the 33-year-old. But perhaps the Diamondbacks would be alright with jettisoning him for a relatively cheap package given his contract situation.
