The New York Yankees need a third baseman, and everyone knows it. The problem is that there aren’t many of them available, so the Yankees will have to scour the market for options.
Here’s the real kicker: ESPN’s Jeff Passan has named New York as one of the best fits for Boston Red Sox star Alex Bregman, who just signed a lucrative multi-year contract with the Red Sox in free agency.
Boston traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, which has led some to believe that Boston could sell by the MLB trade deadline. But the Red Sox’s decision to move Devers seemed to have more to do with his apparently negative locker-room presence than anything else.
Still, after trading its best hitter, you do have to wonder if Boston will start to sell off some other pieces, with outfielder Jarren Duran representing a potential trade candidate. But would the Red Sox really jettison Bregman almost immediately after landing him?
The chances of that happening seem very slim, and as for the chances of the Sox sending Bregman to the Yankees? Yeah, less than zero.
Yes, Boston and New York have made trades in the past. As a matter of fact, the two sides have swung three deals since 2023, including a trade that sent Alex Verdugo to the Bronx. However, Bregman is obviously a different animal.
The 31-year-old — who has been sidelined for over a month due to a quad injury — is slashing .299/.385/.553 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI over 226 plate appearances in what has been a terrific bounceback effort from Bregman after posting a .768 OPS last season. He has also been brilliant defensively, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
It should be noted that Passan gave the Red Sox only a 10 percent chance of actually moving Bregman. If that’s the case, then there is a zero percent chance he gets dealt to the Yankees. Let’s be real here.
